In our avalanche and snow training course, supervised by our state-certified mountain guides, you will not only learn how to use emergency equipment to rescue victims in the event of an avalanche, but also the basics of preparing an outing and putting it into practice on the ground. The second day is a full day in the snow for ski touring. This allows you to test and put into practice the assumptions of the route planning. You will also begin to orientate yourself to follow a route, track, identify and assess danger points according to the conditions and apply decision making strategies.

The basics of risk management

Provisional programme

Our high mountain guides have designed this 2 day course to allow you to better understand risk management in ski touring and avalanche rescue in expert mode, in partnership with the ORTOVOX brand which will allow you to test the equipment and to have support.

Day 1: The first day is dedicated to welcoming and assessing the level of the participants, we check the correct functioning of the equipment, we talk about the behaviour to have in case of an avalanche, and we carry out an intensive training to search for victims.
The end of the day is spent in a mountain hut, we make an initial interpretation of the avalanche bulletin and discuss the use of the risk assessment method and plan the next day's route.

Day 2: This is a group hike where we cover the basics of snowology with a section of the snowpack, we talk about the fragile layers, but also the basics of the modern risk management method which allows us to compare the observations in the field with what we had predicted the day before by reading the avalanche risk assessment bulletin. We give each participant information and tips for planning a hike.

The best time to take this course is at the beginning of the season, when the snow is most unstable. Several sessions are offered from December to February to allow you to see the change in the snowpack.

Level required for this course: Level 2 - INTERMEDIATE.

This course is suitable for those who have already learnt the basics of avalanche rescue and who wish to develop their practical and theoretical knowledge to become more autonomous.

For those who have not yet acquired this knowledge, we strongly recommend that you take part in our course on learning to use avalanche rescue equipment.

Meeting point

Meeting on D1 at 8:30 am at the car park of the bus station of Thônes.
The place and time of the meeting may change. Your guide will contact you if necessary.
End of the ski day: between 3pm and 4pm

4 to 6 people maximum for a mountain guide

As a mountain professional, the guide reserves the right to adapt, modify or shorten the itinerary according to the weather conditions and/or the level of one or several participants. In this case, no refund will be made.
