Strong points of the stay
- Immerse yourself in the Far North.
- Evenings by the fire.
- Comfortable refuges, some with saunas.
- The chance to see the Northern Lights, depending on weather conditions.
Our stay begins in Abisko, in a comfortable hotel on the edge of a large frozen lake. We're above 68° North, well above the Arctic Circle. We're getting ready to trek 120 km on snowshoes and pulka through a desert of stone and ice in the heart of the Swedish Alps, roaming from hut to hut. Climatic conditions can be severe in these far northern regions, so you'll need to be well equipped and physically fit. The scenery and colors are magnificent, as the sun is still shining brightly in March. Depending on solar activity, we can observe the magic of the northern lights, which are visible at night in clear weather conditions. Every day we'll be cruising through vast glacial valleys where only the best-adapted animals, such as ptarmigan and elk, survive the winter. The refuges along the way are simple but comfortable. Some are equipped with saunas. This warmth will be welcome to relax our muscles and warm us up after days spent in the extreme cold. This comfort comes at a price, as every hiker will have his or her share of chores to do when arriving at the hut: chopping, splitting wood and fetching water from the frozen lake or river. In the far north, comfort has to be earned! In the evening, we'll enjoy a candlelit meal by the fireside of a Swedish hut.
